• Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are the horses ridden every day?

A: Depending on the time of year and the age of the horses, most of the horses are on a 4-6 day per week riding schedule.  Most rides average 10-20 minutes.

Q: Will the assistant trainer have the opportunity to show the horses?

A: Yes, the assistant trainer will have the opportunity to show horses at schooling (unrated), C and B shows.  The candidate will also be assigned at least one "project horse" for which, the assistant trainer will assume full responsibility for training, riding and showing.  The candidate will have the opportunity to show the "project horse" at all the shows the horse attends during the year including the A shows (all expenses paid).  The rest of the "A" circuit showing may be assumed by the pro rider, although the "A" showing may be shared at times with the assistant trainer at the pro rider's discretion.

Q: What is the salary for this job?

A: It is difficult to make a firm offer to a candidate without the benefit of a live interview as each individual candidate's skill set and experience set is different.  We believe we have a good sense for what the better show barns pay their employees for similar positions and we intend to be competitive.

Q: How many people are on staff?

A: In addition to the assistant trainer, we have two other full time employees.  The first employee works Monday through Friday 8:00 to 5:00 and most Saturdays.  This employee has been with us for over ten years and she is responsible for many tasks that are necessary to keep the barn running smoothly (raking arenas, shipping horses to appointments, etc.).  We also have a full time groom on staff from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 to 5:00.  This gentleman is extremely knowlegable and will report directly to the Assistant Trainer.

Q: When are you looking to fill this position?

A: The assistant trainer position is available immediately but we are also in a position where we could wait for the right candidate to become available if needed.  It is important to us to take the time to find the right candidate who is interested in joining our team on a long term basis.

Q: Can I bring a horse?

A: We are a small private facility and our barn only has eight stalls which at the current moment are all full.  This summer we expect to erect a 50' x 30' loafing shed in a large 8-acre field.  The shed will also have an attached stall.  We are hoping to complete this project by the fall of 2012, at which time we would expect to be able to offer the assistant trainer year-round self care board for their horse.

Q: How can I apply for this position?

A: Please send us a resume and references via e-mail or fax 845-361-4171 and a riding video via YouTube or snail-mail.  The riding video should demonstrate the WTC on a hunter-type horse and some jumping, preferably a course that is at least 3'.  After we receive a resume, references and a riding video, promising candidates will be offered a "live" interview.  "Local" candidates will generally be invited to interview with us on two separate days for approximately 1-2 hours each day.  The first interview will be with the owner and the staff and the second interview will be with the pro rider and the staff.  "Long distance" candidates will generally be invited in for a three-day interview.  We will provide plane tickets, transportation and accommodations.
