• Job Description

Private Show Hunter facility in Middletown, NY has a full-time, permanent position available.  Facility owners are a 40-something couple who work full time.  Barn manager will oversee the barn, develop programs for, and oversee the care for up to eight show hunter prospects "soup to nuts".

Position entails providing
full care for up to eight show hunter prospects.  Daily responsibilities include managing a small staff, which will assist with feeding, turnout, mucking, grooming and keeping the barn, arenas and paddocks maintained. 
Barn manager will also be asked to oversee the starting of green prospects and school/train green and green-broke horses on the flat. 

Other responsibilities include, ordering feed, bedding and supplies, scheduling and supervising farrier, chiropractor and dental appointments, and shipping horses to the clinic for veterinarian appointments.  The position also requires routine health maintenance to include, icing, cold hosing, polticing, wrapping, worming, administering IM and IV shots, administering medications and minor injury care.  

 
The barn manager will also coordinate weekly training appointments for the horses.  Training appointments may occur at our farm or they may take place at the pro rider's farm which is located 20 minutes away. 

Barn manager will also be asked to ship horses to shows, prep horses for shows, arrange for braiding appointments (at A shows) and act as a show groom.  Most shows are within a 75 minute drive (one way). 
 
Occasionally the barn manager may be asked to make horse shopping trips or accompany the owner on horse shopping trips.  Owner pays all travel expenses, including meals, airfare and lodging and barn manager earns an additional fee for each night spent “on the road” horse shopping.
 
Barn manager may be asked to assist in the sale of 1-3 horses per year.  Candidate would be responsible for fielding telephone inquiries, scheduling appointments and prepping and showing the horse to potential buyers.  Should a potential buyer vet a horse, barn manager may be asked to ship horse to, and be present during vetting appointment.

Although is it not a requirement of the job, the qualified barn manager will have the opportunity to school investment horses over fences at home and show green horses at local shows (all expenses paid). 

• Experience Required

 
This position does entail riding young horses.  A solid hunter, equitation or dressage riding background is required.  Experience starting and bringing along young hunter prospects is required.  Promising applicants may be asked to submit a short video riding on the flat.  Youtube videos are welcome.

Experience as a hunter/jumper show groom or hunter/jumper show barn manager or equivalent is required.

Organization skills and the desire to run a small barn "soup to nuts" are key.  The ability to recognize and address early signs of lameness or muscle soreness is indispensable.  Ability to recognize early signs of equine distress, such as colic, dehydration, etc., and take appropriate action is invaluable.

Experience body clipping,
trailering horses and operating a tractor (raking arenas and emptying manure spreader) is highly desirable.

• Facility


P
rivate facility situated on 37 acres includes an eight-stall center aisle barn with auto waters, a 2-bedroom manager's apartment, an 84’ x 214’ indoor arena, a 140’ x 250’ outdoor arena, 11 grass turnout paddocks with automatic waterers and eight sacrifice paddocks with automatic waterers. 
 
• Hours


During non-show days, barn manager will generally be asked to work from approximately 8:00AM to 5:00PM (with a one hour lunch) Tuesday through Sunday.  Mondays off.  Candidates will be asked to accommodate important appointments such as veterinary calls, farrier visits and other necessary appointments if they fall outside the hours outlined above, although this is uncommon.
 
Night check duties to be shared between the barn manager and another employee.

• Salary and Benefits

We are a private facility and all the horses are owned by us.  Quality, reliable help is a priority and we understand we need to be competitive in order to attract high quality people.   Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

 
In addition to a salary, the candidate will be compensated for extra hours spent at shows or on horse shopping trips and he/she will have the opportunity to earn extra income braiding for shows (if desired). 

Two vehicles are available for farm business.  However, we will reimburse the candidate for any farm-related mileage put on his/her personal vehicle at the IRS standard mileage rate.

Qualified candidates will have the opportunity to show our horses at "B", "C" and schooling shows (if desired), with all expenses paid.

One and one half weeks (9 days) paid vacation days in the first year.  Three weeks (18 days) paid vacation days per year thereafter.   

Opportunity to participate in profits generated in the purchase and sale of horses.

Some very modest health care coverage included.
 

Assistance with relocation expenses to include the reimbursement of U-Haul rental, fuel and tolls is possible.

• Housing

The barn manager position comes with an all-expenses paid unfurnished apartment located above the barn.  The apartment has two bedrooms, a laundry room, a full bath, wood floors, eat-in kitchen with granite countertops, wireless internet service, cable television, central air conditioning, hot water baseboard heat, a spacious living room and over 1200 square feet of living area.  The second bedroom in the apartment may be offered to another staff member at a future date. 

One small/medium dog or a cat is welcome.
